Be Your Own General Contractor — Learn How to Do Your Home Reno Project from Start to Finish
January 27 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm CST
You want to do your bathroom: What comes first?
So you’ve decided to get off of Pinterest and redo your kitchen, bathroom, living room, basement, or entry. Fabulous! So now what? What’s the first step? How much will you take on, and what will you hire out? What order does it go in? Do you have to get a permit? Where’s the best place to order flooring and how much should you get?
What happens if the plumbing is terrible once you open up the walls?
Listen, we’ve all been there. Emily, Kelly, and our instructors have been through major home DIY projects. There’s definitely a limit to what you can do yourself (legally) in your home. And some things are just better when someone else does them. Anyway, there are a lot of things you can do to save yourself a lot of time, money, and double work.
In this session, bring your idea for your home renovation project so we can look at it together. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’re working on, and we’ll answer your individual questions. We’ll also talk about the other of operations, what has to be inspected and what doesn’t, how to plan out and where to buy materials, and show you common mistakes we’ve all made.
Bring in photos, plans, and drawings, and it’s OK if you don’t have anything yet.
This class has two instructors. You’ll work in small groups and by yourself.
You will learn:
- How to start a home DIY project
- Order of operations: plumbing, electrical, etc
- Good places to buy supplies and materials
- How to demo safely
- How to dispose of different kinds of waste
- Timelines, contracts, and managing contractors.
All supplies for the class will be provided for you, including safety gear.
