Be Your Own General Contractor: Learn How to Do a Home Reno Project Yourself
March 17 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm CDT
You want to do your bathroom or kitchen: What comes first and what will you screw up?
So you’ve decided to redo your kitchen, bathroom, living room, entry — So now what? What’s the first step? How much will you take on, and what will you hire out? What order does it go in? Do you have to get a permit?
What happens if the plumbing is really bad once we open up the walls? EEK!
Listen, we’ve all been there. Emily, Kelly, and all of our instructors have been through major home DIY projects. There’s definitely a limit to what you can do yourself (legally) in your home. And some things are just better when someone else does them. Anyway, there are a lot of things you can do to save yourself a lot of time, money, and double work.
In this session, bring your idea for your home renovation project so we can look at it together. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’re working on, and we’ll answer your individual questions. We’ll also talk about the other of operations, what has to be inspected and what doesn’t, how to plan out and where to buy materials, and show you common mistakes we’ve all made.
Bring in photos, plans, and drawings, and it’s OK if you don’t have anything yet, we’ll start it here.
This class has two instructors and you’ll work in groups and individually on your own projects.
You will learn:
- How to start a home DIY project
- Order of operations: plumbing, electrical, etc.
- Good places to buy supplies and materials
- How to demo safely
- How to dispose of different kinds of waste
- Timelines, contracts, and managing contractors.
All supplies for the class will be provided for you, including safety gear.
